On December 9, the Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment organized a symposium on the fulfillment progress of the PVC industry in Beijing. Relevant leaders from the International Affairs Department, Solid Waste Management Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Energy Conservation Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Foreign Economic Cooperation Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and local environmental authorities were present at the meeting. Besides, the meeting was attended by representatives from key manufacturers such as Xinjiang Zhongtai, Xinjiang Tianye, Shaanxi Beiyuan, Shaanxi Jintai, Ordos Electric Power Metallurgy Group and Xinfa Group, alongside with Vice President Zhang Xin and Vice Secretary-General Zhang Shoutie of CCAIA. Leaders from the International Affairs Department, Solid Waste Management Department, Foreign Economic Cooperation Center, and Energy Conservation Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology delivered speeches, introducing and analyzing the progress of mercury-free VCM negotiations at the sixth COP of the Minamata Convention, domestic and international trends and requirements, and the urgency of mercury-free production in the acetylene-based PVC industry. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on the challenges faced by the industry in fulfilling its obligations, issues in transitioning to mercury-free production as well as the evaluation of mercury-free catalyst research and applications. The meeting concluded that further work would involve intensifying efforts to promote mercury-free catalysts, strengthening cross-departmental collaboration, and consolidating policy resources to lay a solid foundation for negotiations at the next COP session of the Minamata Convention.
